Building an inclusive education ecosystem in Lithuania through the psychology- and sport-based program "Spindulys"

Devbridge Foundation is proud to support the innovative project “Spindulys”, which helps children from socially vulnerable families and students with special needs overcome challenges and discover their strengths. Our support to the Lithuanian Association of Day Care Centers enables the expansion of this unique initiative, which combines sports and psychology to strengthen inclusive education.

Why is this project important?

Childhood is one of the most vulnerable stages of life. Yet not every child receives sufficient care, support, or opportunities. According to data from Lithuania’s Department of Statistics, thousands of children in the country grow up in socially vulnerable families. Many of them face behavioral and emotional difficulties, experience social exclusion, or lack access to extracurricular activities. This directly affects their development, self-esteem, and ability to integrate successfully into society.

How does Spindulys project work?

The project is based on the joint efforts of a psychologist and a sports coach. Sports activities become not only a physical experience but also a tool to develop:

  • self-confidence,

  • communication and cooperation skills,

  • positive behavior and emotional regulation.

The program provides children with not only experiences of success but also ongoing psychological support. Research shows that this method helps reduce hostility, negative emotions, and strengthens children’s ability to engage in the learning process.

Children’s experiences

Spindulys has already given children the chance to experience activities they once dreamed about – from figure skating to team sports. Participants share that they have become braver, more confident, and have learned to accept others and build friendships. One child reflected: “I learned how to communicate with my group mates. At first, I was shy and distant, but over time I understood the importance of talking, not fighting, and accepting others as they are.”

Role of the Devbridge Foundation

Our contribution allows the project to grow, reaching more children across Lithuania and ensuring that they too can benefit from this positive transformation. Spindulys is more than just an extracurricular activity – it is a support model that could serve as a blueprint for building inclusive education nationwide.

A vision for the future

The long-term goal is to adapt and integrate this model into more Lithuanian schools and day care centers, ensuring that every child – regardless of family circumstances or individual difficulties – has the opportunity to learn, grow, and participate fully in society.
